A CONVERSATION WITH ARTIST ERIC JOHNSON

Sit back and listen to the conversation or even ask Eric a questions about his painting techniques and all he has learnt in his exploration of Rembrandt’s traditional painting techniques practiced over 300 years ago.

Eric Johnson is a Boston based painter and instructor at the Academy of Realist Art Boston.  He covers many genre of subject matter from portraits, landscapes and still life.  Many of us were introduced to Eric recently in the ‘Streamline Premium Art Video – Rembrandt’s Secrets Revealed’.

Eric has studied much of Rembrandt’s techniques, from using lighting to communicate mood, employing a systematic way of working, grinding and making paint, toning a canvas, creating a flat layer to mass in the big dark shapes, the expressive use of thick paint, thin glazing techniques, applying dead colour and much more.  He explains very well the simplification of the big dark, flat shape that is the chiaroscuro method, the need to step back from your work, spending time to get the shapes correct early on and many more of the concepts that I discuss and teach in my classes.
